![]() I do miss the feature in Notability, though, the animations and especially the ability to skip through the audio from your notes. It syncs to notes the best kind of audio recording in a note-taking app. The second reason Noteful was a perfect replacement for Notability was its audio recording feature. Predictable apps have no surprises, which translates to fewer distractions in a workflow. That is not to say the app is perfect, it just means that everything (good and bad) you experience in the app is predictable. Noteful is very stable, so much so that we are yet to see a bug. An unstable app is, therefore, not hard to spot. However, because we try apps so much, we constantly deal with a lot of bugs. As a general rule, we don’t focus on bugs when reviewing apps in the hope that developers will fix them (which they do). First of all, the app is as stable as Notability, even GoodNotes is not that stable. There are two main reasons Noteful stole my heart in an instant. My top reasons Noteful is as stable as Notability Let’s go through the reasons Noteful was able to completely replace Notability in my workflow. Mostly because ZoomNotes is very complicated and required time to learn, which I simply didn’t have at the time. There was a time I switched to ZoomNotes, but that was a short-lived transition. I use it for one unique task taking accounting notes on a custom template, for which it’s ideally suited.I had been trying to replace Notability for years. GoodNotes has ATROCIOUS support for typing, an awful image usage system and, if it has support for recording audio, I can’t find it. Adopting GoodNotes’ optional rubber behaviour would be nice too. The only thing keeping me from using Notability for EVERYTHING I note is the small template selection / lack of customisable templates (that just show up as a background to every new page - yes I know you can, and I do, use a PDF as a background but only on a page-by-page basis). Things, Omnifocus, Outline (OneNote equivalent), Notebooks, GoodNotes, Noteshelf 2, Notes Plus … It reflects a very logical, computer-like structure, used in countless other apps, too e.g. Notability has a weird hierarchical structure that’s not easy to work within. ![]() But I suspect at this point that I will stay with the issues in ZoomNotes and find a workflow with ZoomNotes that I can use rather than try to learn something new. With my new iPad Pro and Pencil, I am as curious about Notability and GoodNotes for note taking. I do not need text recognition, figure imports, and many other bells and whistles. I am now using it to keep hand written notes of meetings. I used ZN on my iPad exclusively for a while to make simple and rough engineering-type drawings for lecture notes. The document management paradigm is … unique. With ZN I would caution however that it has its own set of issues. ZoomNotes and Concepts have a better approach with pens on the left or right to allow two handed operation (draw with one hand and change pens with the finger of the other hand). I am annoyed to reach “up and over” my paper to get pens for example. I especially dislike apps that put settings and selections fixed at the top of the page. Having spent much time in ZoomNotes, I can also attest to it as a feature laden app, more so than many.
